Last weekend, during my four day amazing business retreat with 200 entrepreneurs from all over the world my business coach Marisa Murgatroyd worked with me to help me define my unique voice. As a business coach and talent trainer this is a very prevalent topic for me and I have spoken to you many times about transformation and how to find your true self and how to use your identity to fuel your passion.
The uniqueness that is YOU underlies everything you say and write in your business. To be able to find the unique you- you need to look at the experiences and threads of your life. The unique moments that define you because you evolved from them. You need to determine the transcendental moments in your life.
“One has to go back to the beginning of things, always. Trace the threads of life – find the knot – and untangle it.” – Maria Ostenso
While filling in the timeline of my life I was searching to identify my top transcendental threads (which are often called universal threads). The core themes in my life that summarized what I was thinking, feeling and doing over the timeline of my life. I had to go back to the beginning of my self-development and look early in life, writing dates, events and phases from the time I was born into the present. I was unwinding the tapestry of my life – and it was a great trip down memory lane.
“Although the threads of my life have often been knotted, I know that on the other side there is a beautiful pattern.” – Corrie ten Boom
Looking back – it was funny to realize that as early as 1995 all the major transcendental moments seemed to have happened in just one year. This was the year where I traveled to Australia and where most of the values and ideas that I hold dear today were formed: Perseverance, Identity and Freedom.
Perseverance
I wanted to go to Australia to go after my ex-boyfriend who emigrated to Australia. Something like that was a costly affair for a young woman and I needed a plan. I determined what I wanted, figured out what I needed (financially) and I went for it.
I had three jobs: selling cheese at Albert Heijn, working at an Italian Restaurant in Heiloo and working in a Greek restaurant in Alkmaar – all whilst finishing my HAVO. With the money I earned from working hard I could pay for my ticket and travel for the first two months. During the one year trip I would work any job I could find to pay for extras. From picking tomatoes to working in restaurants. Determination and perseverance is a thread that runs like a red line throughout my whole journey in life.
Identity
In Australia, on my way to picking tomatoes, I got into an accident. All of a sudden I went from being a pretty naïeve young woman (who was asked several times to be a model) to a woman who had scars on her right face – for life. The accident and scars on my face helped me to find my inner strength and rely on my inner power instead of my looks. It showed me that I had to trust in myself. I found a power within myself that maybe I would have only found later in life. I also realized that life could be short. I felt more alive than ever and built character instead of only relying on my looks.
Freedom
Australia also opened a new way of living for me. I felt free for the first time. I felt that I was meant for more…I found my identity. I learned to trust my intuition and I knew that I could be successful if I followed my own path. I got rid of the boxes within my thinking and listened every day to what my body and mind told me and trusted myself to know that this was what I was supposed to be doing.
When I look at these most important moments of my life, I see that these threads are also present as the core in my business: Finding my identity through hardship and owning my real talents, the pay-off that comes from hard work and following my own path, taking the plunge and going on an adventure instead of the regular (and safe) career path…And that is what I integrate in my message through my business everywhere.
And I help other women to do the same by creating the business that they are meant to build.
For women to find their own identity by owning their real talents – their Life Talents. Which gives them the freedom to live their life on their own terms and earn money doing what they love to do the most.
How would it feel to look into your own heart and know what you really want to say, to make a connection with who you really are, before you share your blog or instagram post or when you have a sales call?
Earning money in my business with my real talents gives me the same feeling of freedom and joy that I experienced during my year of backpacking in Australia. No regrets.
So, find the Transcendental YOU and use this to Rock your business.
XOXO
